The Senior Section covers Rangers, Young Leaders and young Guiders - in fact, any member of Girlguiding UK between the ages of 14 and 26. Most Senior Section Guides are members of a unit, whether a Ranger Unit, Look Wider Group or other Senior Section unit, or are leaders (pre-warranted, warranted or YL) with Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or ocassionally a SS unit.

Any young woman aged 14 years old or over can join the Senior Section - you don't have to have been involved in Guiding before, but you do need to be keen on achieving things, action, adventure and fun!

You can take part in challenging outdoor and environmental projects, sports and activities, or join in community development at home and abroad - hard work but immensely rewarding.

You can also choose to develop your leadership skills with a programme that is flexible yet challenging and fun. You can take part in a GOLD project (Guiding Overseas Linked with Development) or be part of the leadership team of a local Rainbow, Brownie or Guide unit, helping organise activites, accompanying them on trips or to camp, and finding ways for them to help out in the community and meet all sorts of challenges.

Whatever you choose to do, you'll certainly have fun. You'll also learn about teamwork, organisation and effective communications, come to understand what citizenship really means, and acquire the confidence to take on any challenge - all invaluable additions to your CV and qualities much prized by any future employer.

As in the younger sections, the five essentials and the eight points of Guiding form the basics of Senior Section Guiding : the eight points have been renamed Octants but cover much the same areas and provide a huge range of ideas and activities. There are no set activities and members of the Senior Section can choose exactly what they want to do from the opportunities presented to them

The Five Essentials of Guiding are exactly as before:
  • Working together in small groups
  • Self-government and making your own decisions
  • A balanced and varied programme
  • Caring for the individual
  • A commitment to a common standard

and the Octants (which form the Look Wider scheme) are

  • Out of doors
  • International
  • lndependent living
  • Sport and fit for life
  • Leadership
  • Creativity
  • Service in the community
  • Personal values

The most prestigious award open to Senior Section members is the Queen's Guide award. This is for anyone between the ages of 16 and 25 inclusive. You can download the syllabus by right-clicking here and selecting "Save Target As..."
